The Chaffee County Young Guns, BVHS’ trap shooting team, wrapped up their fall conference this fall. The team had a successful season, finishing 151 points ahead of the second-place team.

“We kind of opened up the scoring floodgates,” coach Jake Farber said. “We only have four schools in our conference.”

Trace Steed finished 1st in 1A Conference 2, with a season average of 23.90. Wayne Nagel came in 3rd, with an average of 23.00. In fourth place was Ty Munchoff with a 22.70. Among the women, Taia Martinez finished 5th with an average of 20.00.

Leadville’s team had three students. Avalynn Homer finished with an average of 21.10, 1st among women in 1A Conference 1.

“I’ve been encouraged by the participation of the parents,” Fabrer said. “I tell the parents, ‘By the time your student graduates high school and you pass away, you are only going to have, on a statistical data basis, 365 days with that student. This is the time to spend with your parents and your student.’ If we’re not doing in now, we’re missing opportunities.”

Farber said that when his students were in school, he and his wife “spent an inordinate amount of time on the wrestling mats and in wrestling venues with our boys, and that’s something you can never replace.”

Participating in athletics and activities, he said, puts kids on the right path.

“You're in the process of learning what a good citizen is and what a good friend would be,” he said. “Our students have been coming along exponentially. I mean it. They've been growing up like I'd like to see them grow up, with respect to responsibility and etiquette. We push that a lot, and we push the parents, too. Like any other organization, we have situations where people are outside of the boundaries, and we have those conversations, and we use those opportunities to demonstrate how it's supposed to be done.”
